Purpose Academic failure tolerance (AFT) is one of the important psychological concepts in education, but its applications in medical education are rare. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of academic failure tolerance on academic achievement fluctuation among medical school students using a longitudinal research design.
Methods The subjects were 43 medical students who responded to the AFT test. This study analyzed the longitudinal data of achievement scores up to the 2nd academic year (2012–2013) among students who were divided into academic achievement improvement and decline groups.
Results Comparing the improvement and decline groups’ mean academic achievement fluctuation scores demonstrated that behavior and preferred task difficulty showed high scores whereas feeling scores were lower in the improvement group (p<0.05).
Conclusion In the improvement group, despite the higher negative feeling scores during academic failure, the students favored the more difficult subjects and were more assiduous in their studies. This will form an important basis for enhancing academic achievement among medical students.

Purpose We performed a two-and-a-half year follow-up study of strategy factors in successful learning to predict academic achievements in medical education.
Methods Strategy factors in successful learning were identified using a content analysis of open-ended responses from 30 medical students who were ranked in the top 10 of their class. Core words were selected among their responses in each category and the frequency of the words were counted. Then, a factors survey was conducted among year 2 students, before the second semester. Finally, we performed an analysis to assess the association between the factors score and academic achievement for the same students 2.5 years later.
Results The core words were “planning and execution,” “daily reviews” in the study schedule category; “focusing in class” and “taking notes” among class-related category; and “lecture notes,” “previous exams or papers,” and “textbooks” in the primary self-learning resources category. There were associations between the factors scores for study planning and execution, focusing in class, and taking notes and academic achievement, representing the second year second semester credit score, third year written exam scores and fourth year written and skill exam scores. Study planning was only one independent variable to predict fourth year summative written exam scores.
Conclusion In a two-and-a-half year follow-up study, associations were founded between academic achievement and the factors scores for study planning and execution, focusing in class, and taking notes. Study planning as only one independent variable is useful for predicting fourth year summative written exam score.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to analyze the results of quantitative and qualitative student evaluations of team-based learning (TBL) and student achievement evaluations during TBL.
METHODS Questionnaires that evaluated medical student perception and self-assessment of the TBL experience included 38 questions on the TBL process. Also, we used scores from the TBL session to investigate student academic achievement.
RESULTS Our results showed that the more proper the educational environments were, the more focused students were on team learning. According to the distribution period for preliminary assignments, there was a difference in self-directed learning. In addition, team members had the opportunity to learn new knowledge by interacting with each other, and when they had the experience of feedback, they understood the instruction topics through team learning better. With regard to peer evaluation, the students who recognized the importance of assessment studied more sincerely and honestly. By experiencing the TBL process, every team showed a high significance in the group readiness assurance test score compared with the individual readiness assurance test score, and student satisfaction with the TBL and expectation levels about capacity strengthening increased as well.
CONCLUSION TBL is an effective teaching and learning method and has positive impacts on student academic achievement. A study on student academic achievement and perception of TBL is expected to provide medical educators with suggestions on planning teaching strategies for effective TBL administration.

PURPOSE This study was performed to identify academic and nonacademic predictors of the success of entrants to Chungbuk National University Graduate Medical School (CNUMS) during the first 3 years of completion.
METHODS We analyzed the academic achievements in preclinical education in the first 2 years in students who were admitted in 2005 and 2006 and compared them with cognitive admission variables and demographic characteristics.
RESULTS There was no significant difference in academic achievement between students groups that were classified by gender, age, or academic degree type. Among Medical Education Eligibility Test (MEET) subscale scores, Verbal Reasoning was correlated with 'Medical humanities & social sciences' and 'Basic clinical procedures;' Nature Science Reasoning 1 with 'Basic medical sciences;' and Nature Science Reasoning 2 with 'Basic medical sciences' and 'Clinical medicine.' Undergraduate GPA correlated well with all academic achievements. English test scores did not correlate with academic performance.
CONCLUSION Among all of the variables that were examined, undergraduate GPA score was the most reliable variable in predicting academic achievement during the 2-year preclinical medical education, and MEET scores were a secondary indicator of academic achievement at CNUMS.
